Considered by many to the best British aircraft of World War One, the 200 hp Wolseley Viper version of the Hispano Suiza engine equipped Royal Aircraft Factory SE5A was by any standard of the day a highly successful fighter.
The SE5A was known for its ruggedness and its dependable engine. What it lacked in ability to turn inside other fighters of the day was made up for in its overall speed, high altitude performance, and excellent zoom climbing abilities.
Although the SE5A first flew in November of 1916, its entry into full active service was delayed when it was found that the "greenhouse" windscreen obscured the pilot's forward vision, these were eventually removed to be replaced by a small "fly screen". Another issue delaying the full deployment of the aircraft was a shortage of engines.
Once the SE5A was deployed in sufficient numbers, it was found that the fighter was capable of matching the top German aircraft, even the excellent Fokker DV11.
A total of over 5,200 Royal Aircraft Factory SE5A aircraft were produced prior to the end of World War One.
After the war the aircraft were exported throughout the British Empire and many others were sold for civilian use, many being used in the new spectacle of "air shows" and aerial sky-writing.
Now you can take to the skies with this outstanding sport scale recreation of the ParkZone® RAF S.E.5a. Its winning combination of scalerealism and easy-going flight characteristics will capture the heart ofeveryone who loves aviation classics.
Parkzone has joined the "Dawn Patrol" with this highly detailed model of the famous World War One biplane fighter, the British SE5A (Scout Experimental) as flown by the leading allied aces of WW1 including William Avery "Billy" Bishop, Edward "Mick" Mannock, James McCudden and legendary British ace Albert Ball.
The model comes almost ready to fly with a quick assembly time and great flying characteristics. The wings of the SE5A give it outstanding slow flight performance and that coupled with a host of features make this scale model stand out from other electric warbirds.
The airframe is fully formed from highly durable Z-foam featuring a wealth of scale detail and is finished in authentic Olive Drab colour scheme and markings. Also featured are a molded cowling with built in radiator detail, simulated exhaust stacks and manifold, open cockpit with detailed pilot figure, superb wing rib detail and scale landing gear and wing struts. Additional scale detail on the SE5A is the inclusion of the dummy Lewis machine gun with Foster mount on the top wing and wood effect inter-plane struts and landing gear fairings.
The SE5A is an ideal size to keep fully assembled as a one piece model and access to the servos and battery pack is easy thanks to the access hatch in the bottom of the fuselage. It flies with four channel control of the elevator, ailerons, rudder and motor control, and the specially designed wing airfoil and light wing loading allows the SE5A to fly slowly and realistically with the ability to perform perfect "roller" landings time after time.
With this super WW1 model, Parkzone has given the modeller the chance to recapture the style and spirit from the "wind in the wires" era of early aviation.
